Controlled Experimentation with Agents - Models and Implementations

چکیده
The deployment of multi-agent systems demands for justified confidence into their behaviour, both with respect to correct results of computations and with respect to timeliness thereof. Depending on the stage of the development process different mechanisms and abstractions are needed to facilitate the rigorous evaluation of interacting agents. We propose a modelling and simulation framework for supporting the development process of multi-agent systems; from specification and implementation. Therefore, experimental set-ups are needed that allow an incremental refinement of agents while providing rigorous observation facilities. The benefit of using modelling and simulation for evaluating cooperative agents is illustrated using a simple example based on the Contract Net Protocol.

The methodological underpinnings of AI are slowly changing. Benchmarks, testbeds, and controlled experimentation are becoming more common. While we are optimistic that this change can solidify the science of AI, we also recognize a set of diicult issues concerning the appropriate use of this methodology. We discuss these issues as they relate to research on agent design. We survey existing test...
متن کاملBuilding distributed applications with Java mobile agents
Mobile agents are quite a novel and powerful paradigms for representing and building distributed applications. Despite its growing popularity, the mobile-agent model of computations has some disputable features and needs further study and experimentation. This paper points out some strengths and weaknesses of the general model and its particular implementations, focusing on the Java-based Grass...
متن کاملDemystifying Performance Predictions of Distributed FFT3D Implementations
This paper presents a comprehensive story of the development of simpler performance models for distributed implementations of the Fast Fourier Transform in 3 Dimensions (FFT3D). We start by providing an overview of several implementations and their performance models. Then, we present arguments to support the use of a simple power function instead of the full performance models proposed by othe...
متن کاملImplementations are not specifications: Specification, replication and experimentation in computational cognitive modeling
Contemporary methods of computational cognitive modeling have recently been criticized by Addyman and French (2012) on the grounds that they have not kept up with developments in computer technology and human–computer interaction. They present a manifesto for change according to which, it is argued, modelers should devote more effort to making their models accessible, both to nonmodelers (with ...
